Crested porcupines cannot shoot their quills — that’s a long-standing myth! Quills are modified hairs made of keratin, the same material as human hair and nails. African crested procupines have three different types of quills, which are modified hairs made: long crest quills for display, shorter and sharper body quills for protection, and hollow tail quills that rattle to warn predators to stay away. When threatened, porcupines stomp their feet, raise their crest, and back up quills-first. Lost quills grow back over time, keeping their prickly coat ready for action!
