Blue tangs inhabit tropical coral reef waters in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The reefs provide a protective hiding space, as well as plant material for food. By eating algae from sponges, blue tang's help to benefit the sponges and preserve habitat for species dependent on the growth of sponges. Blue tangs are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN red list.
