Love At First Leap: A look into the Species Survival Plan (SSP) of ring-tailed lemurs
Nicole Kovara, Lead Africa Keeper, Staten Island Zoo
Madagascar's very own ring-tailed lemurs have all but vanished from many of the nation's forests. It is believed that there are less than 2,500 left in the wild. Deforestation and increased human pressure place this species in a precarious situation. Zoos around the world have established an SSP program, otherwise known as a Species Survival Plan, for ring-tailed lemurs as well as many other animals that are endangered or even facing extinction. Join our Lead Africa Zookeeper, Nicole Kovara, for a discussion of the work the Staten Island Zoo has done and continues to do the ensure the survival of these extraordinary creatures.
