There are two different species of sea stars in our Kelp Forest tank--ochre sea stars, like Patrick, and blunt-armed sea stars.
Sea stars are one of the most well-known examples of a keystone species. These are organisms that act as the glue holding their ecosystem together. If a keystone is removed, it sets off a chain of events that will completely change the structure and biodiversity of its habitat. In fact, ochre sea stars were the first animal to be described as a keystone species!
