Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes

Symbolically adopt our Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes!

The Staten Island Zoo has its roots in North American rattlesnakes, and these two help keep the tradition alive.  Our two residents present an interesting dichotomy--while our male presents the typical coloration (heterozygous) our female is albino!  They share their exhibit with one of our Eastern box turtles but don't worry--she's safe from her venomous roommates!

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes are found in the southeastern United States in warm and wet coastal lowlands.  Although they are terrestrial, they are excellent swimmers.  They are the largest venomous snake in North America.  Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN red list, but with a decreasing population.
