Symbolically adopt our Black Handed Spider Monkey, Grandpa!

Grandpa, our black handed spider monkey has lived at the zoo since 1972!  At 48 years old, he's currently the oldest living spider monkey in captivity.  He loves relaxing at the top of his enclosure and playing games with his keepers.  He has even learned to paint this year!

Black handed spider monkeys live in Central America, with this particular subspecies being found in Costa Rica.  They can be found in the upper canopies and the emergent layer of the rainforest. They have long spidery limbs and a prehensile tail, which acts like a 5th limb!  Black handed spider monkeys are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
