Peacock Ostentation

Symbolically adopt our Peacock Muster!

One of the most beautiful sights you can see is a peacock proudly displaying his feathers!  The Staten Island Zoo has seven peacocks strutting around our park, the most well known of which is Disco, with his spattering of white feathers.

The term "peacock" actually refers to the male of the species, while the female is a "peahen".  The species as a whole are called Indian Peafowl, and a group of them is called an ostentation or a muster.  Only the males have the colorful tail, made up of 30-40 eyespots, or ocelli.  Peafowl are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN red list with a stable population.
