Symbolically adopt our Tamanduas, CJ & EJ!

One look at that cute nose, and you'll fall for our mama and baby tamandua!  You can bet they love sniffing out new things, which helps motivate them in training sessions with their keepers.  Their super long tongues are great for eating up their favorite foods, avocados and of course, WORMS!  In their spare time, they love tearing up logs.  Working in a mulch factory would be a dream for them both!

Southern tamanduas have some of the most interesting adaptations of any animal!  They have no teeth, but a long snout with an opening only as wide as the diameter of a pencil.  They have four long claws on their front feet and five on the back.  They walk on the side of their feet so they don't scratch their own palms!  They also have a prehensile tail that helps them to climb.  Our southern tamanduas here at the Staten Island Zoo have been very important contributors to the SSP program.
